Lightweight vs Standard vs Titan Guards
Our lightweight guard is made from Duralumin this special aluminium allows the guard to be thinner without compromising on strength which means it is 30% lighter than our standard guard. This reduction of weight makes it easier to handle and maneuver. The lightweight guard is often used in Foil and Epee where speed and agility are important.
The standard guard is made with steel. This initially adds weight to the fencing weapon, which can provide more stability and control during thrusts and parries. The standard guard are often used in Epee and Sabre, where control and stability are key.
The Titan guard is our latest design that combines the features of both lightweight and standard guards. The Titan guard is made from a single press sheet of a high grade aluminium that contains titanium. This has created a mid-weight guard with making it a versatile choice.
Sizing for Guards
Guard sizing is an important consideration when selecting a fencing weapon. The guard is the protective component that surrounds the hand and helps to prevent injuries during fencing bouts. Guards come in a range of sizes, and choosing the right size is important for both safety and performance.
Fencing guards come in a range of sizes that a regulated by the rules of the sport. At Leon Paul, we ensure that all of our guards we sell meet these requirements for safety and performance.
If you are purchasing a fencing weapon for a child under the age of 10, we offer junior foil guards that have a smaller diameter to better fit their hand size. These guards provide adequate protection while also helping to reduce the weight of the weapon, make it easier for young fencers to handle. Junior foil guards are typically fitted to weapons with size 0 blades, which are also designed for younger fencers.
Handedness for Guards
The orientation of the guard on a fencing weapon can vary depending on the type of weapon and the hand you hold it with. In foil fencing, the guard is mounted in the centre and is the same for both left and right handed fencers.
However, in sabre and epee fencing, the guard has a handedness and be purchased specifically for left- and right-hand fencers. This is because the orientation of the guard can affect the way the weapon feels and handles during a bout.
At Leon Paul, we offer a range of guards to suit the needs of fencers at all levels of experience. Our foil guards are designed to be mounted in the centre, while our sabre and epee guards are available in bot left- and right-handed versions to provide optimal performance and comfort.
